Identity Theft Protection requires 3 areas:

  1. Credit Monitoring
  2. Identity Restoration
  3. Access to the legal system

When purchasing a protection plan "Make sure the policy helps resolve medical, criminal and employment-related issues- in addition to dealing with lenders- and addresses the expense of hiring a lawyer if necessary. That's what you want the insurance to cover." - Christine Nielson, Ass't Attorney General in Illinois-Kiplinger's Personal Finance 4/08

How to Protect Your Child From Identity Theft

Follow this simple, four-step process to help protect kids from identity theft:

Step One: Make copies of social security cards and birth certificates for all of your children. This information is intended to be proof to the credit bureaus that you are the parent or legal guardian for the child.

Step Two: Create a letter to each of the credit bureaus asking them to 1) inform you if a credit report exists in the name of your child; 2) place a "Minor Alert" for any child who does have credit report; and, 3) provide copy of any such credit report, mailed to you directly. See an example of this letter below.

Step Three: Send the letters to the following three addresses:

Experian
National Consumer Assistance Center
P.O. Box 2002
Allen, TX 75013
Equifax Information Services
P.O. Box 105139
Atlanta, GA 30348
TransUnion
Po Box, 6790
Fullerton, CA 92834

Step Four: Call the Social Security Administration and order an Earnings & Benefits Statement for your child: (800) 772-1213 and request Form 7004. The Statement that you receive will help to determine whether your child's identity could be involved in employment fraud.
